Trip to Gallaudet University I was in Washington, D.C. this past weekend.
It was a very good experience for my husband and I.
The arrests were heart-wrenching, but the people we
spoke with were not weak in spirit! These are
people who have recognzied an issue and decided to stand
up for it. This is theDeaf's Civil War.
People back in the 1800's fought for what they believed in,
and they weren't popular for it BUT THEY WON.
Martin Luther King Jr. led many protests for the Black's
Civil Rights and he wasn't popular either
but he stood up for what he believed in AND WON.Because of
what these people did, America
exists as it is today. It is now our (the Deaf community)
turn to stand up and say enough is enough.
I came back home very inspired to share my story with some
deaf people here. I am saddened at
how lax the people are here. We must recongizethat Audism
exists at Gallaudet, which is considered a
second home for us Deaf people. Gallaudet is the core of
our deaf world, the core ofour very evolution. How
can we stand by and not do anything? If we cannot recognize
that, then it's saying, "Audism is ok.
I can deal with it." NO! We must stand up and fight for this.
If I was able to go in a weekend, I'd like to see more of us go up
there when we can and help with the fight against Audism
(Jane, Jordan, the administration, DPS, and BoT).
It's embarrassing that _______is on the Board of Trustees.
How can we let people like ________ be lax
and not do anything to helpthe Deaf? Is what Jane's about to
do in Gallaudet what Ms. _____ has done for the Deaf
here in Georgia, setting our education milestones back years?
DON'T LET THE MILAN CONFERENCE HAPPEN ALL OVER AGAIN!
